- Pets with healthy teeth and gums will only require suggestions in keeping everything in tip top shape. This can include: special diets (such as Purina Dental Diet), special chewing treats (such as greenies and CET chews), water additive to help keep the teeth clean or brushing the teeth with pet toothbrushes and toothpaste (human toothpaste should be avoided as it contains too much fluoride).
- Pets with mild dental disease may require a dental cleaning called a prophylaxis and then started on a maintenance program to help keep them clean.
- Pets with advanced dental disease will often have to have diseased teeth removed and the healthier teeth cleaned. This will often require antibiotics to help prevent the infection from reaching other parts of the body.
- Exotic animals can also require dental treatments. Because rabbit teeth continuously grow, many rabbits suffer from overgrown teeth due to a congenital misalignment of their jaw, which requires frequent tooth trimmings. Similar problems can occur in guinea pigs and chinchillas. If your furry friend is having trouble eating, is losing weight or is drooling it's time for a dental exam.
