EXOTIC ANIMAL CARE
Wellness Exams
Here at Best Friend's Animal Hospital we recommend annual wellness exams to ensure that your pet is healthy and to prevent medical surprises as much as possible. Wellness exams are also recommended when you first adopt your pet to make sure that he or she is healthy and ready to start their new life with you. To recognize illness in an exotic pet it is imperative to know the difference between normal and abnormal for each species. Wellness visits allow time to ask species specific questions to help you help your pet live it's best life. Tests such as blood work and x-rays can provide valuable information if or when your exotic pet becomes ill as well as helping to catch disease in the early stages. The best value for your pet is through preventive care and education.
Medical Treatment
If your pet is showing symptoms of illness such as abnormal behavior, eating, drinking, urination or defecation, don't delay seeking care and treatment with one of our veterinarians right away. Birds, reptiles and small mammals are extremely adapted to hiding their illnesses both in captivity and in the wild. It is critical to recognize changes in their behaviors and bring them in as soon as you notice the first symptoms, as disease may already be progressing for some time before being noticed.
Grooming
We offer nail, beak and wing trims for birds, nail and tooth trims for small mammals, and nail trims for reptiles.
Spay and Neuter
We provide spay and neuter services for diverse species and sizes. Spay and neuter is important for both behavior and medical reasons including; preventing uterine cancer, reducing mammary cancers, and reducing the risk of testicular masses. Certain species are more susceptible to these problems so ask one of our doctors if she recommends spay or neuter for your pet.
Dental Care
Just because we can't see the teeth as well doesn't mean that they're not hurting! Bringing your exotic pet in for regular check ups can help prevent serious dental problems in the future. A dental x-ray may be recommended for diagnostic purposes, especially in rabbits and rodents whose back teeth are extremely hard to see. We provide dental cleaning, molar trimming, tooth extractions, and further surgeries as needed for your exotic pet.
Nutrition
Your exotic pet has specific nutrition needs and every species is vastly different. We can help you feed your pet to meet all of it's nutritional requirements for growth and maintenance, as well as during times of illness or disease. In addition to giving sound advise of what to buy or avoid at the pet store, we also have a wide range of diets and supplements to help you keep your pet healthy.
